Long-Term Measurement Data for Investigating Atmospheric Effects on Wind Turbine Sound Propagation

Atmospheric conditions can substantially affect wind turbine sound propagation, particularly at larger propagation distances. Long-term field measurements provide the opportunity to investigate these effects under varying atmospheric conditions and to assess their dependence on frequency, distance, and propagation direction. For this purpose, acoustic and meteorological data from two long-term measurement campaigns were systematically processed and classified for the analysis of atmospheric effects on sound propagation and are provided in this dataset.

The dataset contains frequency-dependent excess attenuation for propagation distances of 535, 845, and 1091 m in one-third octave bands from 63 Hz to 2 kHz. Corresponding atmospheric data include wind speed at several heights, wind direction, temperature, relative humidity, and derived parameters and classifications describing wind shear, turbulence intensity, vertical wind-speed profiles, propagation direction, and the effective sound speed gradient. All data are provided at a temporal resolution of 1 min. The dataset enables systematic investigations of frequency- and distance-dependent sound propagation and its relationship with atmospheric conditions, including atmospheric refraction, wind shear, and turbulence.

To support further research and the reproducibility of the presented analyses, the processed data are provided in accordance with the FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). Due to legal restrictions, original sound pressure levels, sound power levels, and audio recordings are not included.

(2026): Systematic measurement-based characterisation of atmospheric effects in the sound propagation of a single wind turbine, currently in preparation for submission to the Journal of Sound and Vibration.

The projects WEA-Akzeptanz and WEA-Akzeptanz Data were funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy by an act of the German Parliament (project ref. nos. 0324134A / 03EE3062).
