RIoT

RIoT is a real-world IoT dataset for evaluating smart building systems in the wild, anonymized from proprietary BMS deployments and collected in collaboration with Innon Energy LTD. RIoT's value proposition was presented at BuildSys '26 in the article titled RIoT: An IoT Dataset for Robust Smart Building Systems in the Wild.

Access to real-world building telemetry is chronically limited in smart building research. Most deployment data is proprietary, and organizations are reluctant to share it due to privacy, security, or vendor lock-in concerns. RIoT addresses this gap by releasing over two years of operational sensor data (March 2024 – July 2026) from 6 anonymized sites across Europe, covering 228 sensors across 12 modalities: indoor air quality (CO2, TVOC, PM2.5, PM10, formaldehyde), temperature, humidity, occupancy (PIR), energy consumption, barometric pressure, light, and odor detection. All data was collected via LoRaWAN-connected sensors using the Project Haystack protocol. To protect privacy, all site and room names were replaced with consistent anonymized identifiers and device serial numbers were systematically anonymized while preserving the Haystack tagging structure. All sensor measurements and timestamps were retained in their original form.

Data Format

Each ZIP archive contains one JSON file per day (YYYY-MM-DD.json). Each file is an array of Project Haystack grids with self-describing sensor metadata (name, unit, kind, room/floor/site references) and time-series readings.
